Nomadic Fiction and the Cabinet of Traditions – Ton Kraayeveld

October 13 through November 11, 2012

Nomadic Fiction and the Cabinet of Traditions

December 2011 Ton Kraayeveld was winner of the Pictura Prize. Part of it is an exhibition in the Grand Room of Pictura, Dordrecht (NL), which takes place from October 13 through November 11 now.

The ‘Nomadic Fiction’ in the title of the show could be described as the story of an unknown traveler. Who is this ‘fictinal nomad’ in Ton Kraayeveld’s show who delivers himself to the new and the unknown? Is he the artist himself who reports of his journeys and encounters? Or is he the migrant, who in urge for survival, leaves his familiar surroundings in search for a better life in a new location? Or perhaps the romantic adventurer of the mind with an indefinable desire to break up and get in touch with far worlds?

In the show complex issues like migration, inter-culturality or urbanization will be transformed into easy to read symbols and icons. Ready for storage in a personal ‘Cabinet of Traditions’. As a model for the images often stand personal impressions taken from journeys or from artist in residence experiences of the artist in Hungary (2011), Berlin (2003) or Zimbabwe (2000).
