Wallpainting Synode                                                                                            400 years ago the City of Dordrecht was the centre of Europe. More than 100 theologists, professors and politicians gathered for the Dordtse Synode, an international theological conference which was of major influence on Dutch history, language, culture and common values. The importance of this conference is celebrated this year with many cultural events relating to the synode in a festival Ode aan de Synode in three themes: language, identity and hospitality.
Ton Kraayeveld’s mural ‘Wallpainting Synode’ was developed as a work in commission relating to the synode conference 400 years ago. The mural is situated on the façade of the ‘Energiehuis’, the city’s major cultural centre which is home for various theatre stages and cultural institutions. In it’s words (in English here – now – as – then – so – later – this) the work relates to the actual moment of being present in time and place in relation to possible moments in past and future, as well as that it points to performances and events acually taking place inside of the building. In it’s deliberate choice for Dutch language the work also refers to the first translation of the bible in Dutch language which was a major achievement of the Dordtse Synode back in 1618.

A visit to China

End of May 2018 I travel to China for a visit to my artist-friend Tanja Smit who has been working there for 3 months as artist in residence at CEAC in Xiamen, China.  At the same time I regard my visit as an introduction to China and in which I have the intention to do research to see if there could be connections to my own work for a possible future artist residency also.

My visit is only two weeks, so very limited in time, but long enough to get fascinated by the complexity of China, in both it’s rich cultural history and it’s overwhelming current reality. Mainly staying in Xiamen, a vibrant large city situated on the seaside of the South-Chinese sea. Last week some short trips. One day travelling to Gulanyou, a small island next to Xiamen, proclaimed as world heritage area, so packed with tourists, interesting for it’s colonial architecture and history. Then a two days trip into mainland countryside in a bus filled with Chinese people for a visit to the ‘tulou’ in Fujian region also known as Hakka-houses. Impressive landscapes and fascinating architecture and taking part in typical Chinese tea-parties!
